Parkland extends win streak

The Parkland High School baseball team continued its winning ways last week, taking all four of its games, three of which were in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Trojans remained in first place in the EPC West Division.

Parkland shutout Stroudsburg 12-0 on the road last Monday, April 17, and then beat Bethlehem Catholic 9-2 at home on Wednesday. The Trojans recorded another shutout with a 6-0 victory over Whitehall on the road on Friday and then closed out the week by hosting Delaware Valley in a nonconference game on Saturday, walking off as 11-3 winners. They have now won six games in a row and 13 of their last 14 games overall.

Against the Mountaineers, it was all Parkland from the start to the finish, in a five-inning game. The Trojans outhit them 10-1, led by three hits from Bo Barthol and two each out of Louis Inserra and Gavin Mohry, each also adding two RBIs, joining Michael Cole and Jaiden Wanamaker with two RBIs. Nathan Bartholomew earned the win on the mound, throwing all five innings, allowing just the one hit.

After a scoreless first inning between Parkland and Becahi, the Trojans scored in each of the next five innings, taking a 5-0 lead after five. The Golden Hawks got on the scoreboard with a two-run top of the sixth, but the Trojans answered with four in the bottom half. Becahi did not help itself defensively, committing six errors.

Barthol and Inserra led the offense with two hits each with the latter contributing two RBIs. Barthol also started on the mound and picked up the win, throwing six innings, allowing two runs and striking out six.

Parkland scored two runs in the first and second innings to jump on top of Whitehall 4-0 early, then tacked on two more in the sixth, while holding a 12-1 advantage in hits. Will Dobil and Cole both recorded three hits, with the former scoring three runs and the latter driving in three runs. Owen DeLong went seven strong and struck out eight for the victory.

Delaware Valley got out to an early lead, bringing home a run in the top of the first, but Parkland responded with one of its own in the bottom-half and then two in the second. The Warriors tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run third inning, but late-game heroics gave the Trojans eight combined runs (five in the fifth and three in the sixth) to take the game.

Dylan Fili had a team-best three hits, three RBIs and scored two runs. Dominic Medlar and Inserra both had two hits and two RBIs. Steven Sepko came on to pitch in relief and was credited with the win, going 3.2 innings, allowing no runs and striking out three.
