LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Hornets bounce back

The Emmaus High School baseball team had a successful week last week, winning all three of its games, all of them in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. It was a much-needed bounce back week for the Green Hornets after losing two of their three games last week and five of their last seven games overall.

In the first game of the week last Tuesday. April 18, Emmaus traveled north to take on Pleasant Valley and came away as 8-6 winners. In a quick turnaround, the Hornets were back on the diamond the next day and hosted Easton, taking down the Red Rovers 7-1. They finished off the week in style with a shutout road win, beating Central Catholic 5-0 on Friday.

Against the Bears, the second inning was a big one for both teams as Emmaus brought home six runs as Chad Kauffman and Colin Wilson hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame and then Dayne Schmidt had an RBI single the next at-bat to make it 2-0. Cohen Schadler and William Fleck then recorded two straight run-scoring singles and Noah Hogan had an RBI sacrifice fly to highlight the scoring.

Pleasant Valley cut its deficit in half with a three-run third. Josiah Williams had an RBI groundout in the third for the Green Hornets, but the Bears once again had a three-run inning in the bottom of the fourth and trailed just 7-6.

Hogan gave his team an important insurance run with an RBI double in the seventh that scored Emmit Budick, who doubled earlier in the inning. Shane Ohl earned the win on the mound, going 5.1 innings, striking out four batters.

Emmaus fell behind 1-0 after Easton got on the scoreboard in the top of the first, but the Hornets scored seven unanswered, including two in the third and five in the fourth, to win the game.

Fleck and Schadler both finished with a hit and two RBIs. Wilson recorded a team-high two hits. Cole Moreau picked up the victory, starting on the mound and giving up just three hits with no earned runs in 3.1 innings.

Emmaus scored a run in the second and four in the fifth while riding the arms of Tyler Geist and Fleck to shutout the Vikings. Geist finished one out shy of a complete game. He did not allow a run and struck out six. Fleck had a hit and an RBI and both Budick and Schadler tallied a hit and an RBI.

The Green Hornets are 9-5 overall and 8-3 in the EPC.
