Emmaus softball pushes win streak to eight games

The Emmaus High School softball team has been playing its best softball in the month of April. The Green Hornets followed up a 3-0 week two weeks ago with another undefeated week last week, coming out on top in all four of their games, all in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, and all were within a span of five days. They entered this week riding an eight-game win streak.

Emmaus began its week with a 10-0 shutout win over Central Catholic last Tuesday, April 18, and then beat Easton the next day, 10-2. Both games were at home.

The Hornets took care of Pleasant Valley 13-2 for a road win last Thursday in the third game in as many days. They ended the week by downing the Vikettes once again, this time on the road, 20-0 on Saturday.

This comes after Emmaus beat Dieruff, Pocono Mountain West and Parkland the week prior. The win streak started with a victory against Nazareth back on April 6.

Emmaus broke open the first game with Central right from the start, scoring six runs in the first inning and held the Vikettes scoreless. Taylor Hiestand finished with a hit and three RBIs.

After a scoreless first three innings against the Red Rovers, the Hornets ran off three straight innings of four runs, five runs and one run. Shayla Morgan and Abby Derr both had three hits and Sherwood, Krout and Sadie Haefeli each recorded two. Barthol picked up the win inside the circle.

Against the Bears, Emmaus did most of its damage late in the game. The Hornets jumped out in front by scoring three runs in the top of the first, but watched as Pleasant Valley scored one in the second and one in the third to find itself down by just one. The Hornets answered when they needed to and tallied a four-run fourth inning and then added two in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Danika Barthol earned the win, going five strong and striking out 11 batters.

Derr went 4-for-4 and scored two runs against PV. Barthol had three hits and four RBIs, and each of Morgan, Krout and Alexis Schoonover finished with two hits, with the latter adding three RBIs. Sherman had a hit and two RBIs.

The second game with the Vikettes was a quick, three-inning affair as the Green Hornets scored nine runs in the first, six in the second and five in the third. Six different players had at least one hit, led by Morgan with three. Autumn Held recorded the victory inside the circle.

Emmaus improved to 11-4 overall and is 9-3 in the EPC.
