BETHLEHEM social calendar 5- 3

LENAPE DISCUSSION: Chief Barbara Bluejay, Keeper of Culture will discuss oral histories, family heirlooms and traditions May 4 at 7 p.m. at Seidersville Hall, 3700 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lower Saucon Township.

The Lenape tribe lived in the Lehigh Valley for thousands of years before the first European explorers arrived. After the Walking Purchase of 1737, most Lenape were forced westward by the influx of European settlers.

FREE SMOKE DETECTORS: Fire Chief Warren Achey and the local Red Cross are rallying volunteers, neighbors and fire departments to raise awareness of the need for home smoke alarms, and an upcoming distribution of free alarms for the Southside May 6. “Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fires in half,” according to the Red Cross.

The national “Sound the Alarm” event will be held locally at Schweder Fire Station, at 419 E. Fourth St., from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

KITE DAY: In partnership with Lehigh Valley Kite Society and Pocono Kite Symphony, the Northampton County Parks & Recreation will sponsor the 31st annual Kite Day in the Park at Louise W. Moore County Park in Lower Nazareth Township from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 6.

This year’s event will honor Andy Gallinas, the founding member of the Lehigh Valley Kite Society and Pocono Kite Symphony. Andy passed away in December 2021.

The program will be held at Pavilion #2 and adjacent open fields on the west side of the park at 151 Country Club Road, Easton.

CHAMBER AWARDS RECEPTION: Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce’s 2023 annual awards reception will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. May 10 at Historic Hotel Bethlehem, 437 Main St. Cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, comedy, networking, entertainment. Awards ceremony honoring those who epitomize the spirit of the city of Bethlehem begins at 6:10 p.m.
