Salisbury baseball enters final stretch
The Falcons continue to battle their way through the Colonial League in hunt for a playoff spot in both the league and districts. With a 6-5 overall record, they are in decent shape and at 5-3 in the Colonial League they are currently fifth in the field for one of the six playoff spots.
A nice long winning streak would go a long way toward helping in both cases but so far, their longest streak is two games. The good news is that they have not lost back-to-back games this season.
The up and down streak continued with a 2-1 record in their last three games. A 12-10 loss to Bangor (9-1, 8-0) was bookended by wins over Moravian Academy (1-6, 1-6) and Notre Dame Green Pond (1-9, 1-8).
Against the Crusaders, six different players drove in runs as Salisbury banged out 10 hits in a 9-5 win. Jake Zellin had two hits and drove in two runs and Nate Nunez picked up two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
The offense erupted for seven runs in the top of the fourth when Michael Stauffer and Zellin led off with singles and Owen Fogel drew a walk to load the bags with nobody out. Caleb Gonzalez drove in a run the hard way when he was hit by a pitch and Tom Lovelidge followed with a base hit to drive in a run and keep the bases loaded with Falcons.
Notre Dame turned a nifty double play to get Gonzalez at the plate and the relay beat Matt Nunez at first to record two runs without a run scoring.
The twin killing could have killed the rally, but after an intentional walk to Jake Bucchin, Jordan Tocci and Stauffer both drew walks to force across two runs. Zellin singled to drive in two more and make it 7-3 in favor of the Falcons.
Lovelidge started the game and allowed five runs - three earned - over 5 1/3 innings and Austin Spisszak finished the game without allowing any damage for the win.
Earlier in the week, Tocci had a big day when he collected two singles and a double to drive in five runs against Moravian Academy in a 17-4 win. In the loss to Bangor, Bucchin had the hot bat, driving in five runs and was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. The Falcons were down 12-5 before a five-run bottom of the fifth made it 12-10.
This week, the Falcons play Palisades (4-5, 3-5), Saucon Valley (6-2, 6-2), and Palmerton (7-3, 5-3).
