Hawks to honor Grasso
Hazleton got some revenge on Liberty Monday after losing to the Hurricanes in last year’s PIAA semifinals.
The Cougars no-hit the Hurricanes in Monday’s action at DeSales University’s Weiland Park, coming away with a 4-0 non-conference victory on the arm of Texas A&M recruit Brett Antolick.
Antolick struck out seven and walked two batters in five innings of work, having Jordan Castrine close out the win with four strikeouts in the final two innings to come away with the win.
The Hurricanes (9-4) took on Nazareth (13-2) on Tuesday, past press deadlines, in a rematch of an earlier season 6-2 loss for the Hurricanes.
Liberty also plays Dieruff (1-13) and Easton (6-7) this week before heading to next week’s final week of the regular season.
The ‘Canes are trying to stay on pace for one of the top three seeds in next week’s East Penn Conference playoffs, as were third behind Nazareth and Parkland this week.
Bethlehem Catholic (9-6) is also fighting for the last spot in the EPC tournament race, as they recovered from a recent three game skid with wins over Stroudsburg and Holy Redeemer.
In last Friday’s 12-2 win over Stroudsburg, the program dedicated their field to long time legendary coach Mike Grasso, renaming the grounds to Mike Grasso Field.
Grasso coached for 34 seasons, compiling 387 wins, two league titles and four District 11 championships. He retired in 2020 after 45 years as a teacher. A plaque that is inscribed with Mike “Buddy” Grasso will be hung in the dugout of the third base side of the field.
“No one represents the love, faith and kindness in Becahi’s nearly 100 years of history more than Mike Grasso,” said Becahi athletic director Chris Domyan. “We are blessed as a community to honor such a wonderful man, who has given a significant part of his life to this school.”
Zach McCoy had four RBI and a home run on the afternoon and Brayden Rader had two RBI to go along with a homerun too. With games against Freedom (6-8) and Easton (6-7) this week, it’s another pivotal week towards clinching an EPC playoff berth.
Freedom is fighting for their playoff lives, as they still have six games left on their schedule, the most of any team in the EPC.
That starts this week with the aforementioned showdown with Becahi, as well as Nazareth and Dieruff on tap.
