LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Baseball needs just one win

Whitehall’s baseball team has hit some stumbling blocks.

The Zephyrs have been one of the area’s biggest surprises this spring, as they got off to a 6-2 start. They had a productive preseason in Myrtle Beach, SC, and their momentum carried into the season.

Last year, Whitehall finished with an overall 8-12 mark, and they were within striking distance of a district playoff berth in the final weeks. First-year head coach Eric Schmitt began to realize his team’s potential last season, and he was confident that his team could turn the district corner this spring.

With seven games left to play, Whitehall had an overall 9-6 mark, needing just one more win to get into the postseason.

Despite their sudden slide, Schmitt is confident his club can reach the mark despite the obstacles.

“We struggled through a midseason slump,” said Schmitt. “It came down to a rash of injuries for us. We had as many as 10 players in the training room for treatment at one time.”

“But we have worked through them, and we are confident we can get to the postseason.”

Dylan Koury led the Zephyrs with a .417 average, and Koury also had a team-high 15 hits. He led the team with two home runs.

Tyler Reichenbach hit .400 and Owen Ness was at .385 with a team-high 13 runs.

On the mound, Evan Kovalcik had a 2-1 record with a team-high 35 strikeouts. Along with Kovalcik, Tyler Mastropieri (2-3, 23 strikeouts), Matt Rader (2-0, 20 strikeouts) and Dylan Carfara (2-0, team-low 0.78 ERA) have paced the pitching staff.

After their win over Allen Monday that snapped a three-game losing streak, the Zephyrs had Northampton (Wednesday), Emmaus (Saturday) and Allentown Central Catholic (Monday) on their upcoming schedule.

“We’re getting healthy,” added Schmitt. “These guys are aware of what they can do, and they gained a lot of confidence at the start of the season.

“We’re looking for a strong finish to the regular season.”
