North Catasauqua council honors retiring longtime treasurer

During the April 17 North Catasauqua Borough Council meeting, a motion was passed to officially approve the retirement plans of borough Treasurer Annette Englert after 23 years of service.

Englert was honored with a short speech from Mayor William J. Molchany Jr. and was presented with her official retirement certificate. Molchany said he will deeply miss Englert and her fine attention to detail and noted he was grateful for all of the help she has provided over the years.

Council President Peter Paone, who called into the meeting, also offered kind words to Englert. Her methodical attention to detail has guided him during their decadelong run together at North Catasauqua, he said.

The thoughts were echoed by other members of the council.

Englert’s official last day is April 28.

Christina Czonstka will be taking over as the new treasurer and has been attending council meetings since March. She has worked closely with Englert since onboarding with the borough and has had great feedback so far.

In other business, council passed a resolution to officially form a building code appeals board. The board will be made up of three local members and two alternates from Lehigh Township. This has been a long-anticipated resolution for the borough, which previously did not have an appeals board.

A motion was also passed to provide sewer relief to two residents who just filled their pools. Sewer rates are billed based on the water intake; however, since the water will remain in the pool and drain into the sewer system, the borough is able to provide relief on that.

Community Night Out is planned for 5-9 p.m. May 11 at North Catasauqua William J. Albert Memorial Park, 701 Grove St., and will be hosted by North Catasauqua Police Department. K-9 and fire rescue demonstrations will occur, as well as fun games, activities, music, food and visits from emergency rescue workers.

Police Chief Christopher Wolfer also said the civilian response to active shooter events course and a self-defense class that were recently offered were both major successes. He extended special thanks to Suburban North Family YMCA for hosting and Officer Steven Santiago for his demonstrations during the self-defense class.

North Catasauqua Borough Council will next meet 7 p.m. May 1 at 1066 Fourth St. To view the agenda ahead of time, visit northcatasauqua.org and click on the news tab.
