LVIA has sensory room for travelers

Passengers rely on Lehigh Valley International Airport, Hanover Township, to provide a low-stress travel environment.

April is National Autism Awareness month, and it’s the perfect time to shine a spotlight on one of the great amenities at your neighborhood airport.

Beyond the TSA Security Checkpoint, a sensory room is nestled quietly on the first floor of the departure building.

In May 2018, LVIA partnered with The ARC of Lehigh and Northampton Counties to construct this resource for passengers with autism and other intellectual/developmental disabilities.

“At the time, [LVIA] was only the third airport in the world to have a sensory room. From day one, the airport began receiving high praise for adding this new space. We quickly realized that this was a game-changer for families and made the dream of flying a reality,” said Colin Riccobon, director of public and government relations.

The sensory room provides a disconnect from the distracting and unfamiliar noises associated with airports. The room is equipped with rubber flooring, low frequency lighting, mounted projector, sensory equipment (soft-shaped chairs, multicolored tiles, etc.)

“The ARC and [LVIA] wanted to ensure the room was outfitted with the essential tools to create a calming environment,” Riccobon said.

Next time you’re taking off from LVIA, take a quiet moment to discover this airport amenity.

“The sensory room will help reduce stress and anxiety for travelers with sensory sensitivities,” said Karen Shoemaker, ARC’s executive director. “This unique space will positively impact many families who travel through the Lehigh Valley each year.”
