Star of the Day opens its 2023 season with “Matilda the Musical,” April 21 - 30, St. John’s United Church of Christ, Emmaus.
The musical is based on “Matilda,” a children’s novel written in 1988 by British writer Roald Dahl. The story follows Matilda Wormwood, a precocious child with an uncaring mother and father who goes to a school run by the tyrannical headmistress Miss Trunchbull.
The musical has music by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly.
Kirsten Almeida, Managing Artistic Director at Star of the Day, says the show is “all about kids becoming superheroes.
“A little girl leads this roller-coaster of a musical with the power of her imagination and determination to find justice for those who are treated unfairly and oftentimes silenced.
“‘Matilda the Musical’ sends a timely message to young people that it’s OK to speak out against wrongdoings and, in turn, demand justice for all,” Almeida says.
Matilda is a girl with wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the lovable Miss Honey. Matilda must deal with Miss Trunchbull, who hates children and loves to come up with cruel punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules.
