Liberty gets past Becahi
In their first city rivalry game of the season, Liberty’s girls softball team hosted Bethlehem Catholic and broke two ties on their way to an 11-7 victory over the Golden Hawks on April 11.
“Losing to Beca my freshman year and sophomore year four times, it feels so good to get that win, especially being rivals with that team,” said Hurricane shortstop Ariana Castillo.
Castillo broke the first tie of the game with a two-out solo home run to center field in the first inning.
“Off the bat, I was already smiling on my way to first base,” Castillo said. “I didn’t even realize there were two outs going up to bat, so I saw that first one there and decided to take a hack at it.”
The Hawks doubled that with back-to-back home runs from Mia VanFleet and Brooklyn Miller in the second inning, and Hailey Pyle’s 2 RBI double put the Hawks in the lead, 5-2.
Becahi stole another run in the third inning on Kristal Torres’ bunt, fielded by Liberty freshman pitcher Adelynn Smith with a throw to Leah Onia at first base but Onia was playing in front of the ball, and Adrianna Truss scored for the Hawks.
Miya Williams relieved Smith in the fourth inning.
“We’re pretty much doing a rotation every other game with them, but I wanted to throw [Adelynn] into the fire and see what she would do, and I thought she did fantastic,” said Liberty coach Sam Carrodo. “I knew she could handle it because she doesn’t let things affect her. She stays stoic in the circle, she throws a great game, and she’s only gonna get better. Miya did a great job and shut the team down, and I was very happy with that.”
Castillo then broke the second tie of the game with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning after doubles by Smith and Addison Sabo. Molly Devers also had a base hit in the fourth.
Madilyn Knepp’s base hit scored the Hurricanes’ last two runs of the game in the sixth inning.
“Very high-scoring game,” Carrodo said. “It’s two very good hitting teams, but we did not play our best defense today and had some miscues we usually don’t make.”
