Hurricanes get past Freedom in tennis

Liberty and Freedom’s boys tennis teams went head-to-head in a city rivalry/battle of the unbeatens on April 17 when the Hurricanes pulled out a 4-2 victory over the Patriots at Freedom.

Prior to the match, Freedom coach Matt Potts said, “I think it’s a pretty competitive match. We’re probably favored at one singles. They’re probably favored at three and four doubles. And I think there will be a lot of close matches other than that.”

Potts couldn’t have been more on target with three of the matches going to three sets.

At one singles, Freedom’s Noah Potts defeated Roman Farhad, 6-1, 6-3.

Liberty’s Luke Appleman defeated Gavin Labaddia at two singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

At three singles, Freedom’s Arun Chhugani defeated David Broczkowski, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles play, the three doubles and four doubles matches finished first with Liberty winning both. Elijah Quan and Jacksen Jobes won, 6-2, 7-5, over Tyler Malitzki and Matt Davis, and Matt Alter and Leo Babbin won, 6-0, 6-1, over John Coulter and Handeep Sandhu.

Then, Liberty’s Sid Tekumalla and Chris Giannaris came back from dropping their first set to Noah Rodburg and Luke Braido to win their match at two doubles, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-3.

Liberty’s team victory earned the Hurricanes the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Regular Season Championship.

Both teams will compete in the EPC Boys Tennis Championships on April 20 at Parkland High School where a champion will be crowned at each singles spot and each doubles spot, as well as a tournament team champion.
