Trojans rout Central Catholic
The Parkland High School softball team had a difficult portion of its schedule last week as it played three games in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference in a span of four days.
Two of the opponents featured the top team in the East Division and the top team in the West Division.
The Trojans fell just short in their first game of the week last Monday, April 3, dropping a one-run game in extra innings at Liberty, 4-3. They followed that up with a quick, three-inning game against Central Catholic on the road, winning 15-0. Parkland finished the week at home, falling 9-6 to Whitehall on Thursday.
Liberty scored a run in the bottom of the first and held that lead until the fourth when the Trojans brought two home and then followed that up with a run in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. The Hurricanes got one back in the fifth and then were three outs away from defeat before they scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh. The game went to the ninth before Liberty won it.
Evelyn Montone led the Trojans with two hits and scored two runs.
Parkland led from start to finish and took care of business from the jump against the Vikettes, scoring six runs in the first and second innings, adding three in the third to finish it off.
Allison Hunsberger had two hits and led a group of nine batters to record hits. Brenna Zavecz, Maria Moore and Anna Hauff-Belleteieri all had two RBIs.
Whitehall used a six-run sixth inning to erase a 6-3 deficit and win. The Trojans scored three runs in both the third and fifth innings after the Zephyrs opened the game with two in the second.
Addison Fritzinger, Moore and Hauff-Belleteieri all finished with two hits. Zavecz and Moore both recorded two RBIs.
Parkland is 4-5 overall and 4-4 in conference. The Trojans split a pair of EPC games with Nazareth and East Stroudsburg North earlier this week. They are at Emmaus on Thursday and then host Abington Heights on Saturday.
