Three home runs help Hornets top Whitehall

The Emmaus High School softball team was searching for a win last week to snap a recent a four-game losing streak. The Green Hornets took out their frustrations with the strengths of their bats in an 11-run, mercy rule win over Nazareth to end the week last week in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Emmaus entered last week dropping its last two games of the previous week to Governor Mifflin in a nonconference game and then Whitehall in conference. The week then began the way the last one ended as the Hornets fell to Freedom last Monday, April 3, and then to Northampton, 2-0, both games were on the road.

But they bounced back in a big way with a 13-2 victory over Nazareth this past Thursday, also on the road.

Against the Kids, both runs were scored in the bottom of the third in a game that featured just five combined hits, as Northampton outhit Emmaus 3-2. Danika Barthol threw all six innings inside the circle and struck out a season-high 12 batters, allowing just the three hits.

Then, the next day against the Blue Eagles, the Hornets hit a season-best three home runs and recorded 14 hits to aid another great outing by Barthol, allowing just the two runs and struck out six batters. It was the first win of the month of April for Emmaus.

Barthol helped herself with a two-run home run in the second inning that broke a 2-2 tie. Mason Roselli also had a home run in the game, a two-run drive in the third inning as part of her 2-for-4, three RBI day. Senior second baseman Daria Krout also went yard with a two-run homer in the fifth. Every batter in the lineup had at least one hit. Shayla Morgan had a game-high three hits and scored four times. Abby Derr had two hits and Brianna Amy also had a pair of hits.

Emmaus had a game at Dieruff this past Monday and then hosts Parkland in league action on Thursday before finishing the week hosting Spring-Ford in a nonconference game. The Green Hornets are 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference.
