The Emmaus girls track and field team beat one of the better teams in the East Penn Conference last Thursday afternoon, taking down Easton, 80-70.
Coach Kami Reinhard’s squad had a battle on their hands throughout. The Hornets got off to a good start with a victory in the 100-meter dash courtesy of Abigail Burnett, while Emma Paradise edged out a victory in the 400.
Hailey Reinhard took care of business in winning the 800 and 1,600, while Madelyn McCartney took the 3,200. The Green Hornets also won two of the three relay races.
In the field events, Emmaus struggled in most events, although Claudia Walls won the high jump. The Hornets did enough in the track events to earn the win.
Earlier in the week the Hornets had a much easier time in beating Whitehall, 114-36.
Ava Rincon contributed to the Emmaus cause with a win in the 3,200. She won by 25 seconds over the second-place finisher. Another sterling Emmaus prospect is Kayla-Rayne Quinones, who the 100 and 300 hurdles.
The Hornet relay teams made it a clean sweep in the three races.
Hannah Gehman also got into the act, winning the javelin throw. Her Emmaus teammate Sheldyne Pierre won the long jump.
Kami Reinhard termed the 2023 campaign a “rebuilding” one for Emmaus, but the Hornets are 4-0 in league meets and could finish as one of the top teams in the league this year and challenge for a title.
“We still have plenty of talent to be a top performing team in the league and district,” Reinhard said.
