The Parkland girls track and field program continued to show the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 they mean business.
Last Tuesday the Trojans hammered Freedom 141-9 to improve to 3-0. The victory, like the two others which proceeded it, showcased the talent and depth of coach Stephen Ott’s squad.
Senior Naeema Salau continued her winning ways by claiming the 100 and 200-meter races. Teammate Kaley Seide won the 400, while Lucy Tobia, Madison Seed and Jessica Price won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, respectively.
Parkland’s Madison Bowman, a senior, was excellent this afternoon, winning the 100 and 300 hurdles. It was the same story for the Trojan relay teams, which swept all three races.
A promising sophomore, Sophie Mang, claimed the high jump in the field events. Catherine Crampton was tops in the long jump and the triple jump, while Claire Eberhardt won the shot put and Helena Mercatili took the discus throw. Vanessa Ball, a freshman, made her presence felt in winning the javelin.
This team has the chance to be a special one for Ott, who has been involved with the Parkland program dating back to his high school days.
“As a freshman in high school at Parkland, I was taught to hurdle by a senior hurdler,” Ott said. “Starting my sophomore year I started to take the lead with the training of our hurdlers. It was fun...This is my fourth year as head coach....Seeing all of their (his team’s) growth and success is very rewarding.”
The Trojans are set to visit Central Catholic on April 12 and Haverford High School on April 15.
