DR. JACK SILVA’S APPOINTMENT: On April 24, the board of directors will appoint Dr. Jack P. Silva the next district superintendent, effective July 2023. Dr. Silva will succeed Dr. Joseph Roy, who has served as superintendent since 2010. Dr. Silva began his career in the district in 2010 as the assistant superintendent and chief academic officer. He is recognized as a state and national leader in improving students’ reading achievement, establishing school-community partnerships, and creating career pathways in support of graduates’ post-high school success.
BASD STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Alec Rubery is the BASD Student of the Week. Alec, a senior at Freedom HS, is co-trumpet section leader for the band, pit orchestra, jazz band, orchestra and wind ensemble. “Alec is a natural leader and a great student as well.” Alec will represent Freedom at the PA All-State Band at the end of April.
BASD STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK: Fred Harris is the BASD Staff Member of the Week. Harris is the Liberty HS athletic director. He was named PA Region 2 Athletic Director of the Year.
#BUILTBYBETHLEHEM PERSON of the WEEK: Mario Stuart, director of benefits for Seltzer Group Partners, grew up in Bethlehem and is an alumnus of Liberty HS.

SOCCER CAMP 2023: The Liberty HS Soccer Club will host camps at Nitschmann MS for students who will enter grades 1-7 in the fall. There will be morning camps from June 19-22. Evening Camp will be from July 17- 20. For more information visit basdschools.org, or email LHSC@ptd.net
BASD STEM OUTREACH DAY: On April 22, the Freedom HS Engineering Girl Power Society will host a day of STEM activities for middle school age students at Broughgal MS from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the cafeteria. For more information, email egpsociety2020@gmail.com

REAL ESTATE CAREER & MENTOR PROGRAM: Keller Wiiliams Real Estate will host a Real Estate Career and Mentor program April 25 at 5 p.m. at Northeast MS at 1170 Fernwood Street. For more information contact the BASD Office of Equity.
SPRING GARDEN SCHOLARSHIPS: Spring Garden ES PTA is accepting applications from seniors who attended Spring Garden for $500 scholarships. Full details are available on the Spring Garden PTA Facebook page.
FREEDOM HS CLOTHING DRIVE: Freedom’s football program is sponsoring a clothing drive April 22 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Clothing, shoes, purses should be bagged in tightly closed bags. For more information, please contact Marci Sporka at teamsporka@gmail.com
MUSICAL INSTRUMENT COLLECTION: Lucas Aburto and Shane Colemann, students at Northeast MS, are collecting gently used musical instruments for use in BASD music programs. Donations can be made at any school office during the month of April.
FOOD DISTRIBUTION: Northeast MS hosts a drive- through food distribution the second Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to noon at 1170 Fernwood St. for families of BASD students.
COPS N KIDS CELEBRATION: The 15th annual Cops n Kids Celebration of Reading and the Arts and Sciences will take place April 22 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Fowler Center on Third Street. The event will begin with a parade down the Greenway to the Fowler Center.
ARAMARK BIKE GIVEAWAY: In partnership with General Mills, Aramark, the district’s food service provider, is giving away bicycles to elementary students. All students need to do to enter the contest is eat breakfasts and lunches at school. Winners will be announced at the beginning of May.

WILLIAM PENN ANNIVERSARY: The William Penn Elementary PTO will be hosting a 50th anniversary celebration and second annual Art Auction April 20 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Student and community art will be displayed and auctioned off to raise proceeds for school initiatives. The program will include art activities, recognition of former principals, a raffle to ring the school bell, and a special presentation from Mayor William Reynolds.
