DR. SILVA NAMED NEXT SUPERINTENDENT: Dr. Silva has been Assistant Superintendent and Chiif Academic Officer for BASD since 2010. “I am confident Dr. Silva will continue to keep the BASD moving forward as the premier District in the Lehigh Valley. Under his leadership as assistant superintendent and chief academic officer, our students have been given access to new curricular opportunities and have grown academically,” said School Board President Michael Faccinetto. The BASD Board of School Directors will vote on Dr. Silva’s appointment April 24.

DR. ROY and DR. DRAPER HONORED at NAACP EVENT: BASD Superintendent Dr. Joseph Roy and BASD Director of the Office of Equity Dr. Bonita Draper were honored at the NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Shilpa Das, 5th grader at Donegan ES, is the BASD Student of the Week. “Shilpa is a First in Math Grand Champion and an incredible mathematician. She is an outstanding role model and goes above and beyond in the classroom.”

STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK: Roseanne Kratzer, Certified School Nurse at Freedom High School is the BASD Staff Member of the Week. “Ms. Kratzer has patience and a kind demeanor with every student that enters the health room. There is no injury too small for her tender , loving care.”

#BUILTBYBETHLEHEM PERSON OF THE WEEK:

Bill Safranek is the Person of the Week. Bill is an alumni of Freedom HS. “Bill is currently a Realtor for eXp Realty. He was a teacher at Freedom HS for 30 years.”

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE RENEWAL: if your child receives Medical Assistance, please visit www.compass.state.pa.us to update your information and process any needed renewal, to prevent your benefits from being canceled. Student services in BASD will not be disrupted.

PRE-K REGISTRATION: BASD is accepting registration for its FREE Pre-K program for 4 year olds. Students must turn four years old by Oct 1st 2023 to be eligible. To register, or for more information, please contact Pre-K secretary Mrs. Pomales, at 610-865-0012, extension 16818.

NCCC DENTAL CLINIC : The college will offer dental screenings and cleanings, X-rays and fluoride treatments for children up to age 17 on Saturday April 15th from 9am to 12pm at the Fowler Center on 3rd Street. Appoints are required. To make an appointment call 610-861-5442.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS

ALEX RUBERY ADVANCES to STATE BAND: Following the PMEA Region 5 Regional Band Festival, Freedom High School Band and Orchestra announced that Freedom’s Alex Rubery will be in the PMEA State Band.

BASD STEM OUTREACH DAY: On Saturday April 22, the Freedom HS Engineering Girl Power Society will host a day of STEM activities for Middle School age students. There will be prizes, and snacks and drinks for sale. The event will be at Broughgal MS from 11am to 1pm in the cafeteria. For more information, email egpsociety2020@gmail.com

BAVTS HOSA STUDENTS to GO to HOSA FUTURE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS STATE COMPETITION: 61 BAVTS HOSA students will compete at the State Competition at the Valley Forge Convention Center.

SCHOLARSHIPS from SPRING GARDEN ES for LIBERTY and FREEDOM STUDENTS: Spring Garden ES PTA is accepting applications from seniors who attended SPRING GARDEN ES, for $500 scholarships. Eligible students must fill out an application, provide an essay and two letters of reference. Full details are available on the Spring Garden PTA Facebook page.

FREEDOM HS CLOTHING DRIVE: Freedom Football will hold a clothing drive on Saturday April 22nd, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Clothing, shoes, purses and more will be accepted. Items should be bagged in tightly closed bags. For more information, please contact Marci Sporka at teamsporka@gmail.com

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT COLLECTION: Lucas Aburto and Shane Colemann, students at Northeast MS, are collecting gently used musical instruments for use in BASD music programs. Donations can be made at any school office during the month of April.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

COPS N KIDS CELEBRATION OF READING: On Saturday April 22, the 15th Annual Cops n Kids Celebration of Reading and the Arts and Sciences will take place from 11am-3pm at the Fowler Center on 3rd St. The event will begin with a parade down the Greenway to the Fowler Center. There will be entertainment, free food, free books, science experiments, crafts and more.

ARAMARK BIKE GIVEAWAY: In partnership with General Mills, Aramark, the District’s food service provider, will be giving away bicycles to elementary students. All students need to do to enter the contest is eat breakfasts and lunches at school. Winners will be announced at the beginning of May.

LINCOLN ES SEL DAY: Lincoln ES held it’s second annual SEL Day on March 24th. Students and Staff focused on a book called “My Special Word”. 13 different orgsnizations of Community Partners helped with SEL Day.

THOMAS JEFFERSON ES CHIPOTLE NIGHT: Thomas Jefferson ES PTO will have a fundraiser at Chipotle on April 11 from 5-9pm at their Freemansburg Avenue restaurant. Use code H993BHV if you order online.

THOMAS JEFFERSON ES PLAYGROUND REFRESH: Volunteers from Air Products, United Way of the Lehigh Valley and Moravian University put down fresh mulch and repainted the playground at Thomas Jefferson ES.
