Bright expects busy track season

This spring, Cedric Bright plans to have a busy spring.

That is, as far as being a member of the Catasauqua track program.

The senior plans to run the 100 and 200 and be part of the 4 x 100 and 4 X 400 relay teams. He’ll also participate in the high jump.

Last season, Bright finished eighth in the high jump in the Colonial League final with a mark of 5-1. That event opened a door for Bright last year.

“We didn’t have anyone,” recalled Bright. “Coach Rusnock and I talked about it, and I figured I would try it. Since I was very young, I have always enjoyed running, so I knew I would be running some events.

“For me with the high jump, it was just getting over the bar. When I started, that really was the only thing I was concentrating on. But I knew there was much more than that. I knew I had to start working on my form.”

A year later, Bright has taken a different approach to it.

“Now, I am working on the technique to the jump,” added Bright. “I began to realize there is a lot more than just trying to get over it. Working on my form can help me do better this season. I am really enjoying what I am doing.”

Head coach Kyle Rusnock is confident Bright can have a banner year.

“Cedric is a phenomenal athlete,” stressed Rusnock. “He will do very well for us this year.

“He has the possibility of meddling in multiple events this year at leagues and districts. Cedric also has a great shot at making a trip to states. He is very dedicated and working very hard.”

In turn, Bright has appreciated Rusnock’s support.

“He is a big reason that I stayed with track as a freshman,” said Bright. “Coach Rusnock is a great motivator. He pushes all of us to do the best we can. I am grateful to have him as a coach.”

As a senior, Bright also has engaged in a leadership role. He is optimistic the team can elevate its status in the league.

“So far, everything is going well,” he said. “We have been pretty competitive over the last few years, and I think we can go further this year. Our returnees have been doing a good job, and we have a good group of freshmen.

“We have people back on our relay teams, so we should do well there, too.”

Bright also had a four-year career as a member of the Rough Riders’ basketball team. During his time, he played both the point and shooting guard role.

Head boys’ basketball coach Eric Snyder sees Bright as a student of the game.

“Cedric is a very quiet, friendly, well spoken, thoughtful, insightful young man,” said Snyder. “He thinks the game of basketball on the court as well as in personnel moves. He was a very good leader for us, staying calm during tense and stressful situations during the games. He was able to keep us head and think it through.

“At times, he was too much of a team player, in terms of not believing in himself that he could score. We are going to miss Cedric, especially his leadership. He has a bright future at the college he attends, and I think he will make a good coach someday.”

Bright plans to attend college next fall, but he hasn’t made a choice.

Until May, though, Bright figures to be pretty busy.
