Boys taking huge strides this season

In three years, it’s safe to say that Northampton’s boys’ lacrosse team is on the upswing.

They went from one win, then to six wins last year, and began the week with a 5-2 mark, winning three straight. The Konkrete Kids beat Moravian Academy, 6-5, and then throttled Bethlehem Catholic, 20-1, and Schuylkill Valley, 17-1.

It’s the type of progression that has generated plenty of positives around the program.

“We have a lot of winnable games left,” said head coach Fran Meagher. “We have a good core group of seniors, who have stepped up their play, and their experience has helped.”

Meagher, who took over the team when former head coach Geoff Chenworth passed away in March 2022, has seen a momentum swing from last season.

“We won our last three games last season, and we are 6-6 in our last 12 games,” he added. “You can see the difference in the commitment and attitude of our players. We had some guys who played in the offseason.

“We have been playing well, and their confidence level is growing.”

Senior Jack Mengel, a two-time captain, leads a returning crew that includes fellow seniors Parker Christman, Carson Czarnecki, Colin Doyle, Tucker Ellis, Kaden Hooven, Brad Smith, and Dominic Walnock.

Aidan Micheli, another senior and a wrestler, has made some strides.

Junior Toby Feddor, a backup last season, has been strong in the nets.

“Toby has done a nice job for us,” said Meagher. “He has stepped up his play and has stepped into a leadership role.”

Meagher is optimistic about his junior, sophomore, and freshmen classes, citing some possible depth from all of them. Sophomore Eli Block is a promising newcomer.

“The classes are small, but we have some good players,” said Meagher. “We’re hoping to have them develop. We recently won our first JV game, so there are plenty of good signs.

“We also have been working with our middle school program, and it has been moving along.”

With a winning streak, Meagher believes his club can take the next step.

“I think we have an excellent chance of having a winning season,” stressed Meagher. “We are confident that we can make it to districts.”
