A Berks County man faces charges of assault, resisting arrest and attempting to flee police after he allegedly assaulted customers in a convenience store and fought with police after a car chase.
According to court documents available online April 10, Ryan J. Jacobs, 44, of Temple, was unable to post bail and was placed in Lehigh County Jail.
Macungie police detailed the incident as follows in a news release:
Officers responded to Turkey Hill Minit Market, 141 W. Main St., Macungie, 2:25 p.m. April 6 for an assault and found the suspect allegedly attempting to leave the store parking lot in his vehicle.
As a police officer approached the vehicle, Jacobs, the motorist, allegedly accelerated, nearly striking the officer and fled northbound on State Route 100.
The motorist proceeded onto Willow Lane where he abruptly stopped the vehicle and got out, according to police.
“The defendant was reaching in his waistband and a Taser was deployed in attempt to take him into custody,” according to the news release. “The defendant ripped the Taser darts from his body and began fighting with responding officers.”
Jacobs was taken into custody at the scene.
Police investigation revealed the incident began when Jacob’s allegedly grabbed a store clerk at the convenience store and smashed the clerk’s cellphone to prevent calls to police. Jacobs also allegedly broke the cellphones of two customers.
According to court documents and police, Jacobs faces a felony charge of allegedly fleeing or attempting to elude officers, two counts of resisting arrest and three counts each of simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
According to online court documents available April 10, bail was set at $25,000.
According to a social media post, assisting agencies included Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville and Alburtis and Upper Macungie Township police departments.
