Allentown Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Fu, “Tchaikovsky’s Fourth!,” 7:30 p.m. April 15; 2 p.m. April 16, Miller Symphony Hall. The ASO’s 2022-23 season finale weekend begins with “Meet the Artist,” noon April 14, Miller Symphony Hall. ASO Music Director and Conductor Diane Wittry leads a talk about the music with the guest artist Leonard Fu, above, violin soloist, and 2022 Schadt String Competition first-prize winner. Tchaikovsky’s “Fourth Symphony” features Fu. The concert includes a piece by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, an English composer of African heritage who studied with Edward Elgar. The program: Coleridge-Taylor, “Overture to The Song of Hiawatha, Op. 30, No. 3: and Tchaikovsky, “Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36.” Chinese-German violinist Leonard Fu’s love for music began at an early age when his two older sisters were practicing the violin and the piano and he started imitating the melodies on the piano by ear. He had his first piano lesson at age four and his first violin lesson at age seven. Fu has performed across the United States and in Germany, China, Russia, Italy and Spain. He has performed concerts with Bremer Kammerphilharmonie, NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Frankfurt Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra and Hamburger Sinfoniker. Fu has a special interest in the performance of old music and studies historical performance practice. He is also an advocate for contemporary music. Fu is enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music as an Artist Diploma student of Donald Weilerstein and Catherine Cho to whom he serves as a teaching assistant. Fu has begun to write and play jazz. Other interests include political activism, philosophy, languages and baking. Fu plays a Lorenzo Storioni, Cremona, 1781 from the instrument fund of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben.
