Newly seated council member steps down
At the April 6 Northampton Borough Council meeting, borough Solicitor Brian Panella announced the borough received a resignation letter from Councilwoman Sandra Sayuk, who resigned for personal reasons.
Sayuk was appointed by council at its Feb. 16 meeting, filling a vacancy left by former council President Anthony Lopsonzski Jr., who moved out of the borough.
Panella said council can vote to accept the resignation at the meeting April 20 and begin the process for finding and appointing a replacement.
In other business, Kelly Frantz, of Northampton Area Food Bank, 1601 Canal St., reported the food bank received a $300,000 grant from Northampton County.
Frantz said the funds will pay for an additional walk-in freezer, new lighting, large refrigerators and heavy-duty shelving. It is expected the expansion will permit the food bank to serve even more residents in the Northampton area.
Council approved a request from Central Assembly of God of Bethlehem to use both municipal park pavilions Sept. 10. The church also requested using the permanent bandshell.
Lappawinzo Fish and Game Association requested and received council permission to use the borough’s portable band trailer June 10. The group is required to pay a delivery fee and provide a certificate of insurance naming the borough as additionally insured.
Northampton Fire Department was granted approval to hold its fourth annual firefighter’s parade July 22. The parade begins around 5:30 p.m. and will be held in conjunction with Northampton Community Days.
Diamond Volunteer Fire Department of Walnutport received permission to use the borough’s portable band trailer June 30-July 2. The department is required to pay a delivery and removal fee, as well as insurance coverage for Northampton.
Delegates from Northampton were selected to the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs conference June 4-7. Attendees include delegate Mayor Tony Pristash and alternate delegate Councilwoman Bonnie Almond.
Jerry Serensits was appointed zoning officer, replacing Juliann Edelman. A committee was appointed to meet with Serensits to discuss the role. The committee members are Anthony Lopsonzski, Judy Haldeman and Ron Glassic.
In his report, Councilman Kenneth Hall reported Buzzi Unicem USA donated $2,000 to Atlas Cement Company Memorial Museum. The borough received a check from Northampton County in the amount of $11,732.50 from the payout of the 2021-22 Hotel Tax Grant.
Haldeman reported work continues at the municipal swimming pool. There are thoughts to perhaps increase the cost of a season pass to the pool. She noted swimming pool passes go on sale May 1. Passes can only be purchased at the Northampton Recreation Center, 1 Lerchenmiller Drive.
Councilman Trevor Stone reported the police-sponsored fishing derby is April 22 behind the municipal building at the Hokendauqua Creek.
Northampton Fire Department was thanked by Almond for the assistance its volunteers provided at the recent egg hunt.
Junior Councilmember Ryleigh Tillotson reported she is seeking her replacement for next September as she graduates from Northampton Area High School this June.
At the close of the meeting, an addition to the Northampton Borough Police Department was introduced. His name is Chico, and he entered council chamber with a wagging tail. Chico is the new K-9 police dog.
