“Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!” canters to the stage, 7:30 p.m. April 12, 13, 14, 15 and 3 p.m. April 16, auditorium, Parkland High School, 2700 N. Cedar Crest Boulevard, South Whitehall Township.
Director Lori Colacito is assisted by Vocal Director Alison Lagan, Choreographer Kelly Jean Graham, Pit Orchestra Director Allison Figeroa, Set Designer Katrina Miller, Technical Director Mike Wawrzynek and Director of Visual & Performing Arts Francis Anonia.
With music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics and book by Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical is based on “Green Grow the Lilacs” by playwright Lynn Riggs.
Premiering in 1943, the original Broadway production received a Special Pulitzer Prize in 1944 and a 1993 Special Tony Award (50th Anniversary). There were four Broadway revivals, starting in 1951. The 1979 Broadway revival garnered two Tony Award nominations. One Tony Award of seven Tony nominations went to the 2002 Broadway revival. The 2019 Broadway revival scored two Tony Awards out of eight Tony nominations.
The 1955 American film adaptation received two Academy Awards out of four Oscar nominations.
Notable songs include “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin,’” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top,” “Kansas City” and “Oklahoma!”
