WHS tops Becahi, but falls to Solehi
Whitehall’s boys volleyball team swept Bethlehem Catholic on the Golden Hawks’ home court, 25-16, 25-20, 27-25, on March 30.
The Zephyrs pulled away midway through the first set, but the Hawks tried to inch their way back on three straight blocks by Jack Preiss, Robby Welsh, and Daniel Sledz.
Two balls that fell out of bounds, however, gave Whitehall the first set.
Zephyr kills toward the end of the second set held the Hawks at bay thanks to Jack Kocher, Ethan Ringenberger, and Gavin Kneller, in addition to a tip by Ringenberger.
During a long volley in the third set, Joshua Doane handled a tough Ringenberger spike for the Hawks, but the Zephyrs won the point when Beca hit the ball out of bounds.
Whitehall maintained a five to six point lead until the Hawks scored four straight points after Coach Tim Sledz called a timeout.
A kill by Whitehall outside hitter Aiden Parvel took the set to 21-18, Zephyrs, but Becahi tied on a Zephyr error and a point by the Hawks.
After Ringenberger’s serve landed at the feet of Becahi’s libero to make the score 23-21, the teams traded points, and the match ended on a Hawks error.
“We should not have taken it that far,” said Ringenberger of the 27-25 score. “Our errors were all their points. We have a young team, but that’s really no excuse. We need to lock-in at practice and transfer everything we learn in practice to game.
“Their blocks (challenged us) a little bit, but really, I feel like it was all our errors. If we can put it all together, we’ll have a solid team. We’ve got to get in the right mindset, lock-in on the court, pass the hit, and put the ball down...We need to get hype. If we do what we’re trained to do, we’ll come around with the win.”
On April 4, the Zephyrs lost a two-set lead against Southern Lehigh to drop the match, 2-3 (25-14, 25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 10-15) at Whitehall.
The Zephyrs’ convincing first-set win ended on the Spartans’ misjudgment of an inbound ball.
Whitehall led by as many as seven points in the second set, but Southern Lehigh scored seven straight and pulled within one point, 21-20, until a kill by Kocher, two Spartan errors, and a block by Ethan Guzenski ended the set in Whitehall’s favor.
Southern Lehigh took its first lead in the third set halfway through, Whitehall came back to tie twice, but the Spartans prevailed, and in the fourth set, the Zephyrs led by eight points only to see it evaporate.
The Spartans jumped out to a six-point lead in the fifth set, too much for the Zephyrs to overcome.
Whitehall’s next match is scheduled for April 11 at Freedom.
