Tennis gets win, continues to improve

The Whitehall tennis team picked up another win recently, knocking off Pocono Mountain West 6-0.

Nate Mak defeated Sefan Meler 6-1, 6-0 at one singles. Antoni Szlagiewicz won at number two singles 6-0, 7-5 over Jason Rivera and Vincent Tran captured a 6-0, 6-0 victory at three over John Mutia.

Head coach Bob Panny talked about his singles players.

“Nate Mak is a senior, four-year player, experienced, and has grown into a competitive number one singles player,” Panny said. “Antoni Szlagiewicz, a senior, is a four-year player, and has worked his way in his career from a doubles player to number-two singles. Vincent Tran is a senior, and another player who has worked from doubles to singles, He’s very consistent.”

The two doubles team of Peter Raffoul and James Kimble won 6-0, 6-0 over Raman Wilcox and Miguel Lebron.

“James Kimble is a first-year player who has shown great improvement, and is a competitive player,” Panny said. “Peter Raffoul is a sophomore who has taken steps from his freshman year and has a promising future.”

Ahmed Syed and Derek Jimenez won by forfeit at three as did Tomek Karfarski and Evan Naia at four.

“Ahmed Syed is a sophomore and improving doubles player. Derek Jimenez is a sophomore doubles player who has a bright future,” Panny said. “Tomek Karfarski is freshman, first year player who is working hard and Evan Naia is also a freshman, first year player who is improving daily.

“Overall, team has taken steps each and every match and is improving against very tough EPC.”

The Zephs also fell to Stroudsburg last week, 6-0, however the score wasn’t necessarily an indication. Mak took his opponent to three sets as did Raffoul and Syed at two doubles.
