The Emmaus High School baseball team split a pair of games last week. The Hornets remained unbeaten in conference play, but suffered their first setback of the 2023 regular season in a nonconference contest.
Emmaus made quick work of East Stroudsburg South last Wednesday afternoon at Church Lane park, winning 14-1 in five innings.
The Cavaliers scored their run in the first inning, but the Hornets answered with a five-run bottom-half of the frame and then added two more in the second and seven in the fourth to take the game into the mercy rule.
Ryan Hogan and TJ Geist were on the mound and combined two give up just one run and one hit. Hogan threw two-and-two-thirds innings giving up just one run on one hit, while striking out six to record the win. Geist then came on in relief and pitched the final two-and-a-third innings of shutout ball.
At the plate, Emmit Budick paced the offense going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Zach McEllroy went 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBIs and Cole Moreau was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. Joseph Cook, Colin Wilson, Dayne Schmidt and Anthony McWhinney also had an RBI each.
The next day, however, Emmaus was downed for the first time this season, losing to Hazleton 10-1 at home on Thursday in nonconference action.
After a scoreless opening inning, the Hornets plated a run in the bottom of the second on a run-scoring single by William Fleck that brought home Schmidt.
Shane Ohl threw three scoreless innings before the Cougars got on the board with three in the fourth. They added The Green Hornets are 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the EPC.
