Falcons top Wilson in extras

Salisbury had two tough opponents in Southern Lehigh and Wilson last week. They came away with a 1-1 record against the two Colonial League foes, putting their season mark at 1-2 in league games and 2-3 overall.

Wilson (2-2 Colonial League, 2-2 overall) and Salisbury went extra innings with the game tied 5-5. The Warriors put a run on the board in the top of the eighth, but the Falcons were undaunted and came flying back.

Andrew Grejda led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch to Caleb Gonzales, who would single for the second time in the game and drive in Grejda to tie the game.

With two outs in the inning, Gonzales stole second on the first pitch to Thomas Lovelidge, who was then intentionally walked, bringing up Matt Nunez, who worked the count to 2-0. On the next pitch, Nunez singled to left and Gonzales used his speed to score the winning run.

Gonzales, Lovelidge, Michael Stauffer and Jordan Tocci each collected two hits in the game with Stauffer also driving in three runs.

On the mound, Lovelidge threw 6 2/3 strong innings, striking out seven batters and allowing just one earned run. Owen Fogel pitched the final inning-and-a-third to get the win.

Against Southern Lehigh (3-0 Colonial, 3-0 overall), the Falcons’ bats cooled off and their gloves were even colder, leading to eight errors and 10 unearned runs in an 11-1 loss.

Nate Nunez was charged with five runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief, but only one of those runs was earned. Austin Spisszak was charged with three unearned runs in his inning of work.

Down 3-0, Lovelidge reached on an error to start the top of the fourth and Matt Nunez then lined a single to center to put runners on first and second. Lovelidge was thrown out at third on a fielder’s choice for the first out of the inning. Stauffer then lined a single through the middle to score Nunez with the only run that Salisbury would be able to put on the board.

Salisbury hosts Northern Lehigh (1-4, 1-5) Wednesday in what could be a short game. It is actually the resumption of a suspended game that started last week but was halted by rain after 2 2/3 innings. The Falcons lead 4-0 and have the bases loaded with two outs and Gonzales stepping to the plate.

Earlier in the inning, Jake Bucchin hit his first home run of the season. Lovelidge, Tocci, and Matt Nunez also have runs batted in for Salisbury. Grejda has worked his way through three innings on the mound, giving up one hit and striking out five.

Thursday, the Falcons take on the Allen Canaries (2-3 EPC, 3-3 overall).
