Devonshire Park Apartments fire displaces some residents

Five area volunteer fire companies responded to a fire in an apartment unit in the Devonshire Park Apartment complex shortly after 7 p.m. April 2.

An Emmaus Fire Department engine was the first unit on the scene to assist after Western Salisbury Volunteer Company Deputy Chief David Xander assumed command and reported a “working fire” to the Lehigh County 911 Center.

Emmaus firefighters quickly deployed a hose line to knock back the kitchen fire in a studio apartment at 1669 33rd St. SW in Salisbury Township. The kitchen area of that unit had heavy fire damage and adjoining units suffered smoke damage.

While no injuries were reported, several residents of the building were displaced.

In addition to Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company, firefighters responded from Eastern Salisbury Fire Department, Emmaus Fire Department and the South Whitehall Cetronia Station.

A Rapid Intervention Team from Lower Macungie Township was on scene for firefighter rescue if needed.

Macungie Ambulance Corps responded as a firefighter rehab unit and provided energy snacks and hydration drinks.

Salisbury Police Department Sgt. Charles Whitehead roused neighbors to evacuate the surrounding units.

The Salisbury Police Department Fire Marshal team was on scene to investigate the source of the fire.

The American Red Cross assisted a displaced resident, according to a news release from the Salisbury Township Police Department dated April 3.
