Baseball falls to LHS after 3-0 start

Northampton was having a banner start to its season with a 3-0 record and recording 36 runs and 40 hits.

That was until they ran into their old nemesis, Liberty. The Konkrete Kids were held in check by the Hurricanes to the tune of an 11-1 score.

Head coach Mick Sugra reviewed the game with a quote from a famous coach from the NFL - Dennis Green.

“They were who we thought they were,” noted Sugra. “They are a state runner up and have 95 percent of their team back. We didn’t play well, and we didn’t help ourselves defensively with four errors.

“We had a couple of opportunities with runners in scoring position, and we didn’t capitalize.”

Yet, their start can still be a memorable one.

The Kids posted an impressive opening win over Parkland, followed with a 9-0 shutout over Allentown Central Catholic, and a three-inning 17-0 whitewash over East Stroudsburg North.

“The win over Parkland was huge and a big motivator for us,” said Sugra. “Against Central, we just hit. We were glad to get the game over East Stroudsburg North over. They don’t have a lot of kids nor a JV team. They’re not on par with the teams down here.”

The Kids’ early season hitting surge – 46 hits – isn’t a total surprise. Through four games, the Kids hit .422 as a team with Logan Higgins (.636, 4 RBIs), Logan Wolfe (.636, 4 RBIs), Sam Erschen (.455), and Dylan Fosko (.333, 4 RBIs) among those who are setting the pace.

“It’s good that we are hitting early, added Sugra. “We usually don’t hit until the weather gets warmer. We have had a bunch of guys who have been hitting consistently.”

Pitching also has been somewhat steady for the Kids. Evan Hughes and Owen Laury have looked good in starting roles. Depth will be the key.

“We have leaned on Evan Hughes a lot,” said Sugra. “We believe he is going to be our ace. He was good against Parkland and lights out against Central.

“We are also looking for good things from Laury. Sam Erschen hasn’t yet, but we feel we have enough arms. We trotted out four guys against Liberty. We have the arms to put out there.”

Sugra is content with his current lineup, and there still is a battle for catcher between Gavin Pychinka and Isaiah Alicea, who both have seen time behind the plate. The head coach is confident about the remainder of his lineup. Wolfe (right field), Ian Onuschak (left field), and Matt Merced (third base) will hold their spots, as Sugra will move around players due to his starting pitchers.
