John F. Payonk Sr., 92, of Whitehall, died March 30, 2023. He was the husband of the late Anna (Gratzer) Payonk.

Born in Cementon, he was a son of the late John and Catherine (Emerick) Payonk.

He was in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. He was aboard the USS Rich 820 and the USS William Wood 715.

He was a boiler tender at Mack Trucks for 32 years.

He was a lifetime member of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church.

He was a member of Hillside Hunting Camp.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Schuler and Cynthia Frisch; four grandchildren, Tiffany James with Pete, Brian Frisch with Wendy, Stacey Cook with Jess and Brent Frisch; two stepgranddaughters, Felicia and Amanda; 11 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sherri Payonk; and a sister, Carolyn Hodle of Arizona.

He was predeceased by a son, John Jr.; a son-in-law, Barry Schuler; and three brothers, Frederick, Bernard and John.
