STUDENT PROFILE-Tara Messinger, BAVTS/Northampton Area HS

Grade: 12th

Family: Marie-Christina, Brian, and Megan Mensinger

Favorite subject: Math has always been my favorite subject because it is one of those classes that builds while you move through it. You are always learning something new but at the same time, you are learning more piece by piece.

Activities: I am President of BAVTS SkillsUSA and I am also a part of National Technical Honor Society (NTHS). My shop is Masonry where I am the foreman which means I am in charge of keeping everyone working and on task.

Next steps: After high school, I plan on getting right into the workforce whether it is starting as a basic laborer or Union work.

Career goals: My goal is to be able to retire as a Union Mason when I am in my early to late 50s. Most places offer amazing pension opportunities as long as you are with the company long enough.

Heroes and why: My heroes have to be my Uncle Jerry and my Pappy. My Pappy always pushed me to be the best I could be even if I didn’t believe in myself. He has to be the one person that pushed me to be included in everything and try to do everything I wanted. My Uncle Jerry graduated from BAVTS and he was always top in the class so he is my hero and the person I am striving to be.

Hobbies: In my free time I have many hobbies that I like to do. Hanging out with friends, listening to music, crocheting, hunting, and fishing are just a few of the activities I do in my free time.

Current job(s): I currently work at Slopeside Pub and Grill at Blue Mountain Ski Area. I work front of house and back of house at the restaurant. On the side I do also help tutor my friends in school and I house/dog sit.

Volunteer/community work: Being in NTHS one of the things we gave to do is community service. Last year we redid all of the mulch beds at BAVTS. I also helped set up and break down our induction ceremony.

Likes: I really enjoy spending time with friends and doing crafts whether it is crocheting or making bracelets. My favorite thing to do has to be Masonry which is why I love BAVTS so much.

Dislikes: There is one thing that I don’t like and that would have to be people not trying or not being willing to help. You will never know if you don’t try. When people say they can’t do something and they never made an attempt that has to be the thing I dislike most.

Greatest accomplishment (so far): Two of my greatest accomplishments so far are making it into the BAVTS Masonry program as well as joining the National Technical Honor Society. There is one accomplishment that tops them all and that would have to be becoming the president of BAVTS SkillsUSA.

Advice for peers: I always try to give the best advice I can to my peers. My biggest piece of advice has to be never to give up and never think you aren’t good enough. Join that club, put your name out there, and if you try and it’s not for you then you can always drop it but it’s never too late to try. I never thought I would be able to balance Northampton classes, BAVTS, Skills USA president, NTHS, and having a job but it’s possible. All it takes is some motivation and you can do anything you set your mind to.
