Silva appointed BASD superintendent

The Board of School Directors of the Bethlehem Area School District is proud to announce its intention to appoint Dr. Jack P. Silva as the next superintendent of the Bethlehem Area School District effective July 2023. The board will vote to approve Dr. Silva at its April 24 meeting. Dr. Silva will succeed Dr. Joseph Roy who has served as the district’s superintendent since 2010.

Dr. Silva began his career in the Bethlehem Area School District in 2010 as the assistant superintendent and chief academic officer. He is recognized as a state and national leader in improving students’ reading achievement, establishing school-community partnerships, and creating career pathways in support of graduates’ post-high school success.

“I am confident Dr. Silva will continue to keep the BASD moving forward as the premier District in the Lehigh Valley,” said Bethlehem Area School Board President Michael Faccinetto. “Under his leadership as assistant superintendent and chief academic officer, our students have been given access to new curricular opportunities and have grown academically.”

Prior to his position in the BASD, Dr. Silva served as an administrator in the Souderton Area School District. His roles included principal, assistant principal, and director of secondary sducation, director of K-12 education. He taught social studies in Souderton Area School District and Central Bucks School District.

Dr. Silva received his doctorate of educational leadership from Lehigh University, his master’s of education in curriculum and instruction from Kutztown University, and his bachelor’s of science in secondary education from Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Silva is also Built by Bethlehem attending Fountain Hill ES and Broughal MS and graduating from Liberty HS in 1982. He is a lifelong resident of the school district and both of his children graduated from Liberty HS.

“It is an honor to be presented with this opportunity,” Dr. Silva said. “I am looking forward to building upon the excellent work being done by our faculty and staff, as well as extending BASD partnerships with the Bethlehem community. We are blessed to live, learn, and grow in this wonderful school community where each person matters and everyone has a path to a brighter future.”
