The Parkland boys track and field program defeated one of the East Penn Conference’s better teams in a season opening 88-62 win last Wednesday at Easton.
The Trojans utilized strong performances on the track to secure the victory. Dylan Simon was superb in securing the 100-meter dash victory in 10.81. Trey Tremba won the 200, while Praveen Sureshkumar won the 800 run and Ethan Willard claimed the 1,600. Paul Abeln had also a fine individual showing with a win in the 3,200.
Andrew Beers was a major contributor to the triumph over the Red Rovers. He won the 110-meter hurdles and 300 hurdles, with the latter victory a full four seconds over the second-place finisher. The Trojan relay teams also were on the beam, securing 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 victories.
The field events were all Easton, making the final score competitive. However, the Trojans did receive some good performances here as well. Connor Johns and Jack Harrison each secured second-place finishes in the high jump and triple jump.
Winning on the track and in the field is the goal of all of Parkland coach Stephen Ott’s athletes. That said, the team’s leader says it’s more important for his young ladies and men to be winners in school.
“I remind our athletes they are students first,” Ott said. “They have to take care of their number one responsibility - the classroom.”
Next up for Parkland is a March 28 visit from Nazareth, followed by an April 4 encounter with Freedom
