Track teams excited for season

Versatility and flexibility. Speeds help, too.

That can be the calling cards for the Catasauqua boys’ and girls’ track teams this spring. The Roughs have the personnel to provide some depth as well as to post impressive times.

Catty’s teams dropped their opening meets to Notre Dame of Green Pond recently, but their individual performances were impressive.

“Our upperclassmen really stepped up,” said head coach Kyle Rusnock. “They have been doing well, and they also have been pushed by our freshmen and sophomores. We have a lot of good freshmen and sophomores.”

Junior Heaven Jenkins won the long jump against Notre Dame. Rusnock noted that senior Madelyn Gonzalez has done well in the high jump, and junior Alivia Bear has been running well in the 800 and 1,600. Junior Lauren DeLong has been throwing well in the shot and discus.

Senior Olivia Burnett and sophomore Kelsey Warren are off to a good start in the hurdles.

Senior Cedric Bright won the high jump against Notre Dame and fellow senior Xaiver Rosario has thrown over 37 feet in the shot. Senior Jacob Dove won the 400 against Notre Dame. Junior Josh Rodriguez has excelled in the discus.

Senior Wyatt Younes (jumps and sprints) has been dealing with a leg injury, and he was expected back this week. Younes won the district long jump title and was third in the 100 last year.

“We are being precautionary with him now,” said Rusnock. “We want him back for the end of the season.”

As for the underclassmen, freshman Hailey Jenkins won the 100, and she has the fastest time in the league at 12.30. Freshman Fankie Pujols won the long jump and took second in the triple jump. Cadeo Estranza is another first-time runner who has been running hard in the 800. Josiah Lafond has had a good start in the hurdles.

The Roughies’ relay team of Bear, Heaven and Hailey Jenkins, and junior Abigail Antipas both won the 400 and 1600 relays, having the 1600 unit with the best time in the league.

Freshman Hammad Jenkins, who is expected to be a force in the sprints this season, is currently sidelined with an injury. He is expected to be back soon.

The Roughies also opened the season on their new track, and their expectations will continue to grow.

“It was nice for the kids,” said Rusnock. “We figured things out and it went smoothly. We do have a lot of newcomers, and we’re getting everyone acclimated. We believe we can really make some noise down the stretch.”
