At the March 16 meeting of Northampton County Council, County Executive Lamont McClure told council Lehigh Valley Planning Commission plans to relocate, a decision he greatly opposes. The LVPC would move to a building along the Lehigh River waterfront in downtown Allentown.

Supporters of the move cite the $2 million worth of repairs needed to the current building on Marcon Boulevard. Councilman Kevin Lott said the current building was remodeled less than 10 years ago.

The proposed move has a higher rent, which would mean Northampton County is required to contribute an additional $120,000 to the LVPC each year.

In other business, council heard from residents regarding the renewal of LERTA tax exemptions in Upper Mount Bethel Township.

The Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance Law provides tax exemptions for certain deteriorated commercial and business properties. Residents felt the LERTA tax exemptions should not be renewed. One said the property is not deteriorated. The property, he said, is an open space for preservation.

Other residents spoke of a warehouse development proposed by River Pointe Logistics. Resident concerns include increased truck traffic on the roads and additional noise and air pollution. Council will hold a public hearing, debate and possible vote at its next meeting on the matter.

County council next meets 6:30 p.m. April 6 in the county building, 669 Washington St., Easton.
