Trojan girls seek to return to top
The Parkland High School girls lacrosse team had a long stretch of winning Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 championships in the decade of the 2010s. But within the last three years, the trophy case has been bare and the Trojans are seeking to get back on top of the league and district for the first time since 2019, when they won both golds.
Last year, Parkland finished the 2022 season 10-9 overall and qualified for both postseason tournaments, but ultimately fell short. They graduated four standout players, including Mariana Aubele-Gonzalez, Morgan Napolitano, Kaz Kennedy and Nikki Boyer.
Head coach Brittaney Costigan, entering her third season at the helm, still has a large number of upperclassmen back from the team last season. Kayla McNevin, Hailey Smith, Riley Petronio, Olivia Habash, Morgan Dobil, Gigi Leonzi, Taryn Poremba, Ella Esteban, Hannah Car and Riley Santa-Anna all return and will be leaders of the Trojans team.
A couple of newer players will join the rotation for Parkland this season. This includes Hannah Fredrich, Mae Cook, Marina Galligani, Anna Sensinger, Madi Roseman, Addison Winfield, Sara Filipovits and Lily McAfee.
Costigan has a lot of faith in her team this year and is excited to be able to coach them up.
“We have a very athletic and focused team with a lot of tenacity and team chemistry,” said Costigan. “We are still a fairly young team with not a ton of experience. We really are just developing our game to play at this level. That will be something we are working on all season long. We are looking to do better than last year and play for longer and farther into playoffs.”
Parkland opens its season on the road in EPC action at Nazareth on Tuesday, March 21. The home opener is scheduled for that Thursday night against Liberty.
