Trojan girls place 13th at championships
Four Parkland wrestlers placed in the top seven at Sunday’s MyHouse Girls Wrestling State Championships.
Ella Hesener led the way with a third-place finish, while Shannon Fratus (fifth place), Sylvyn Parham (sixth place) and Abigail Taylor (eighth place) all wrestled in place matches.
Hesener won her first bout by a 5-2 decision over Kristen Walzer (Montour) before pinning Jocelyn Fisher (Cumberland Valley) in 3:18 in the 100-pound quarterfinal.
A semifinal loss to Valarie Solorio of Canon-McMillan dropped Hesener into the consolation bracket, where she pinned Quakertown’s Ashley Stank in 2:53 to earn a spot in the third-place match.
Hesener pulled out a 5-3 decision over Lexi Doerlinger (Slippery Rock) to take third place.
Fratus also won her first two bouts to reach the semifinals, both by decision. She dropped her 148-pound semifinal bout to the tournament’s second-place finisher, Katelyn Coldren of Carlisle.
After a loss in the consolation semifinals, Fratus bounced back with a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker win over Callie Rautenbach (North Allegheny).
Parham (118) also won her first match but dropped quarterfinal match. She won two consolation bouts to reach the consolations semifinals, where a loss dropped her into the fifth-place bout against the same wrestler she faced in the quarterfinal round, Trinity Moore (Connellsville). Moore won the match by fall.
Taylor (112) dropped her opening match but came back with two straight wins in the consolation bracket before dropped her third consolation bout to fall into the seventh-place match, where she lost a 6-2 decision to Aniah Kolesar (Athens).
Several other Trojans competed in the tournament. Saige Rittenhouse (112) and Kelsey Gelb (148) each won one bout at the event. Also competing were teammates Chloe Hillis, Breanna Hann and Zehra Saymaz.
Parkland finished 13th as a team at the state championship meet.
