NOTRE DAME: “Guys & Dolls”

“Guys & Dolls” places a sure bet on stage, 7 p.m. March 24, 25; 2 p.m. March 26, auditorium, Notre Dame High School, 3417 Church Road, Bethlehem Township.

Director Caitlin Bach is assisted by Music Director Ben Stefan and Choreographer Erin Griffith.

The romantic comedy features a high-rolling gambler, puritanical missionary, showgirl and a notorious crap game manager as they navigate the bustle of Times Square, Havana dance clubs and New York City sewers.

The musical, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, is based on the Damon Runyon short stories, “The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown” and “Blood Pressure.”

“Guys & Dolls” premiered on Broadway in 1950 and received five Tony Awards. Of three Broadway revivals, the 1976 revival received three 1977 Tony nominations and the 1992 revival garnered four Tonys out of eight nominations. The 1965 New York City Center production was nominated for one Tony Award.

The 1955 film adaptation starred Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando.

Notable songs include “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” “Luck Be a Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck” and “If I Were a Bell.”
