District to host community resource fair, health symposium

Parkland School District will host a Community Resource Fair, Health Symposium and New Parent Social 9 a.m. to noon March 18, in the high school cafeteria,

All are welcome, including students, parents, friends, family, neighbors, etc., to attend this free, community building and neighborhood networking event.

Highlights include:

•Children’s activities.

•Cooking demonstrations by PHS students.

•”Mock teen bedroom,” presented by the Center for Humanistic Change, will be available for parent tours. This display helps parents recognize signs in a child’s room that they are involved in drugs and alcohol.

•Air Products Hydrogen Car will be on display.

•80-plus agencies will be on hand to share valuable information and have a booth at the event.

•Parent social will engage parents in networking activities designed to help them make connections with each other.

•Parkland Strolling Strings will perform.

•Ten Health and Wellness workshops will be presented in classrooms each hour including:

1) The Impact of Trauma on Teens: Presented by Pinebrook Family Answers.

2) Support Your Child’s Mental and Physical Health with InfoBase: Presented by JR Renna, technology education coordinator, with the school district.

3) Nutrition for Adolescents: Presented by St. Luke’s University Health Network.

4) PREP-Prevention Resources and Education for Parents: How to Talk to Your Children about Drugs and Alcohol: Presented by the Caron Foundation.

5) Mindful Parenting-Strategies for You and your Family: Presented by the Join Shanthi Project.

6) Anxiety: Presented by St. Luke’s University Health Network.

7) Navigating Middle School Years: Presented by Michael Gross, school district counselor.

8) #Trending: Effects of Social Media: Presented by The Center for Humanistic Change.

9) Sports Psychology: Presented by Dr. Christopher Williamson.

10) Intro to Teen Dating, Violence and Social Media: Presented by Turning Point.

The event is designed to spread awareness of services available to families and includes recreational programs, social service agencies, nonprofits and other community-based agencies that serve the community.
