The Emmaus High School girls basketball team enters the District 11 Class 6A playoffs this weekend with a lot of momentum. The Hornets finished off a successful regular season at 13-9 overall and 10-6 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. They were the seven seed in the EPC tournament and upset the second seed, Pocono Mountain West, in the quarterfinal round before falling to eventual champion Central Catholic in the semifinals last Monday night.
Emmaus turns its attention to districts, where it earned the four seed and will compete against five seed Nazareth on Friday evening at Catasauqua High School.
The two teams have not met this season, but met in last year’s district tournament quarterfinal round where the Blue Eagles came out on top, 47-25, to advance to the semifinals and a spot in the state tournament.
Nazareth was also 10-6 in the conference during the regular season and currently has a 12-11 overall record. The Blue Eagles were the six seed in the EPC tournament and lost to the Vikettes in the quarterfinals.
Emmaus head coach Kelsey Gallagher and her staff will look for different players to step up on both sides of the court.
Senior captain Paige Inman has been a leader and consistent leading scorer for the Green Hornets. Junior captain Taylor Griffith is another of the leaders of the program and was tied for the team-high in points with nine in the last game against Central Catholic. Classmate Mya Cooper and freshmen Olive Whitney and Gabby De Vita also can lead the team in scoring on any given night and will be relied upon to help the team win.
The winner of the Emmaus-Nazareth game will take on the winner of the one versus eight matchup in the semifinal round next Tuesday night. Easton is the top seed and EPC runner-up, while Stroudsburg is the eight seed.
