Ashlynn Rivera joins Alburtis Borough Council

Feb. 22 marked the second meeting of the month for Alburtis Borough Council.

Quite a few resolutions were passed during the meeting, mainly pertaining to the newly appointed Borough Manager Stephen Nemeth.

The meeting began without public comment or mayoral report. Following, the meeting minutes of Feb. 8 and the bills for payment were approved.

In the fiscal consultant’s report, a member of council pointed to the budget being nearly $38,000 over budget and it was estimated to only be $5,434 for the year.

In administration, the first item was a payment recommendation to Linde Corporation for the Chestnut Circle Stormwater Improvements Project. There were a couple of questions on line items in the payment application, but the payment was approved.

The next item was to fill the current vacant council position. Christina Kaufman, active on the planning commission and Ashlynn Rivera, active on the special events committee, were considered.

Rivera was voted by council to fill the vacant council position.

Next, Ordinance 579 was approved by council. This expands the parks and recreation commission to nine members and also expands the duties and responsibilities to better organize and promote special events and recreational programs.

Following this were several resolutions. All were approved.

Resolution 2023-5 appointed one voting delegate and two alternate voting delegates to the tax collection committee for the Lehigh County Tax Collection District. Stephen Nemeth was selected as the primary, Tracy Malinowski as the first alternate and John Aleszczyk as the second alternate.

Resolution 2023-6 appointed Nemeth as the borough zoning officer and continued the appointment of Barry Isett and Associates as assistant zoning officer.

Resolution 2023-7 appointed Nemeth as a member of the Alburtis Pension Committee.

Resolution 2023-8 reappointed Ralph Gambler and appointed Nemeth to the Alburtis Environmental Advisory Council.

Resolution 2023-9 appointed Nemeth to the Alburtis Planning Commission.

Resolution 2023-10 appointed Nemeth as the borough representative to the Southwest Lehigh Steering Committee. Councilman Mehmet Birtek was appointed as the alternate.

Resolution 2023-11 appointed Nemeth to the board of the Alburtis Borough Authority.

Resolution 2023-12 appointed Nemeth to represent the borough on advisory bodies to Lehigh County Authority and in meetings of the East Penn Business Council.

After the lengthy list of resolutions, council had two decisions to make regarding the maintenance department. A new mower was purchased for the department and roadwork plans were approved.

Liquid fuel payments were received from the state. It was just over $60,000. Additionally, the RCN Franchise Fee was received in the amount of $12,090.95.

This was the last meeting for Sharon Trexler. She has been the borough manager for 15 years.

Council Vice President Nemeth stated, “With a lot of sadness and admiration, we wish you goodbye.”

Many members of council were very thankful for her service and gave her great praise.

The meeting was then adjourned.
