Condomitti wins District 11 gold medal

At last weekend’s District XI individual tournament, senior Dagen Condomitti claimed his third district title becoming only the eighth Konkrete Kids wrestler to achieve the feat.

He was not seriously challenged in the first three rounds, but Bethlehem Catholic’s Jake Dailey gave him all he could handle in the 152-pound final.

After a scoreless first period, Dailey went up with a quick escape to start the second and scored a surprising takedown midway through period to expand the lead to 3-0. Condomitti got a key reversal with 12 seconds left in the period to cut the deficit to one heading to the final period.

Another reversal followed by two nearfall points were enough to clinch the top place on the podium after a 6-3 decision.

Condomitti described the bout, “It was a good match. He’s a good kid. I’ll probably see him two more times this year.” He continued, “I felt him getting loose on top. I know he rides legs and I felt him slipping so I knew I was going to be able to get out of there. It’s just one more step closer to the goal, the ultimate goal (a state title).”

While winning state gold is the focus, Condomitti has a chance this weekend to become only second Northampton wrestler to win four regional titles. Jeff Ecklof (2000-2003) stands alone for the time being.

Northampton had two more finalists, the Wagner brothers Carson (114) and Trey (121).

Carson, taking the first step on the road to becoming a four-time state medalist, breezed into his final with a first-period fall, a major decision, and finally a tech fall over Blake Dergham of Parkland in the semis. In the final he dropped a 9-1 major decision to Becahi’s Nate Desmond, last year’s state champion at 107, who was named the AAA Outstanding Wrestler for this tournament.

Trey’s final was a matchup of two champions from the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic. Freedom’s CJ Horvath was the titlist at 121, while Trey wrestled at 127 in that event. Horvath was just a bit better on his feet in the district championship match, scoring a first period takedown and then one late in the third to take the title 5-3.

Two seniors extended their Northampton wrestling careers by winning bouts for fifth place and qualifying for regionals, Aiden Micheli (127) and Mason Basara (139). The duo won their win-or-go-home matches by comfortable margins: Micheli 8-3 against Jack Evans and Basara 8-2 over Adriaan DeLeon, both of Liberty.

Provini appraised their performance, “That is not an easy spot to be in when you are wrestling winner moves on, loser goes home as a senior. They both handled the pressure situation very well and scored points. I’m happy for them that they get to come back and give it a go next week.”

Junior Austin Noe is the sixth member of the squad to qualify for the second week of the postseason, his third trip to regionals in as many years. He finished fourth at 133.

Sophomore Gavin Grell was a district placewinner by finishing sixth at 285, falling 2-1 to Michael Gavrilesku of Parkland in the fifth place match.

Overall, the K-Kids finished fourth in the team standings behind Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth, and Easton.
