BC runs away with team title

Bethlehem Catholic made their statement loud and clear at the District 11 3A wrestling tournament over the weekend. After losing out to Nazareth last year in the team standings at districts, the Hawks hammered their way to the team crown at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Becahi advanced all 13 wrestlers to this weekend’s Northeast Regional 3A tournament, had 11 finalists and came away with six champions to easily outpace Nazareth in the team standings by a 315.5 to 273 point margin.

Andrew Harmon (160), Cael McIntyre (133), Charlie Scanlan (145), Keanu Dillard (107), Kollin Rath (139) and Nate Desmond (114) all came away as champions for the Hawks.

Desmond was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament picking up two falls, a tech fall and a 9-1 major decision over Northampton’s Carson Wagner in the finals.

Dillard, the nation’s top-ranked 107-pounder, had little trouble winning his first district title in a 15-4 major decision over Easton’s Nicholas Salamone. Dillard also recorded two falls and another major decision en route to his freshman title.

“I’ve always dreamed of this since I was a little kid and it’s an awesome feeling,” said Dillard. “I’ve been injured most of the year, so I felt like had something to prove. Everybody wants to see me compete and I wanted to show them what I’m about.”

Cael McIntyre also had some added motivation taking on Nazareth’s Charlie Bunting in the eleventh installment of their rivalry. McIntyre held off Bunting 4-2 to make his third win in the last four meetings between the two. It was the only win a Golden Hawk registered in the finals against a Nazareth wrestler, as the Blue Eagles went 4-1 in head-to-head showdowns on the night. For McIntyre, the win was punctuated by his motivation with the Nazareth fans.

“They’re real loud and you can hear it,” he said. “Honestly, it fires me up more than the Nazareth kids. It puts a smile on my face and I love it.”

In the other winning title bouts for Becahi, Harmon knocked off Easton’s Nolan Krazer by an 11-3 major decision, Scanlan won his first district gold with a 6-2 decision over Emmaus’ Marco Albanese and Rath won a 16-7 major decision over Easton’s Oliver Fairchild.

Becahi’s five silver medalists included Augustus Warke (215), Elijah Thompson (HWT), Jake Dailey (152), Luke Thomas (172) and Shane McFillin (127).

The other medalists for the Hawks included James Deluise (189, fifth) and Ryder Campbell (121, third).

Regionals gets back underway on Friday at Memorial Gymnasium with wrestling beginning at 5 p.m. and quarterfinals set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday’s action has the semifinals at 11 a.m. with consolation and championship finals taking place at 4 p.m. The four place-winners in each weight class advance to the state tournament.
