Moyer Way is dedicated

Despite a dreary, blustery start, Feb. 23 opened up into a bright, clear-skied day for the dedication of Moyer Way.

By 1:30 p.m., more than 70 friends, family and community members gathered to dedicate the North Catasauqua Borough trail section in memory of the late police chief, Kim Moyer. As the crowd gathered, you could overhear stories revealing the depth of love and respect the community had for Moyer.

Officers described him as “not just a boss,” but also as a “leader, a role model, a father figure and, most importantly, a friend.”

Moyer died unexpectedly July 13, 2019, at the ago of 68. He had served North Catasauqua for more than 45 years and was chief for nearly 40 years.

His sudden death stunned members of the community, who saw him as an old school police officer who “didn’t go out of his way for attention” but “tried to do the best job he could - day in and day out.”

Moyer added more officers, a new building and a new level of training and expertise to a small department.

Council President Peter Paone, Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure and Mayor William Molchany each spoke at the ribbon cutting for Moyer Way. Veronica Moyer, wife of Chief Moyer, cut the ribbon opening the trail. Fittingly, first to make its way on Moyer Way was the Peacekeeper, an armored vehicle that was the pet project purchased during Moyer’s tenure.

“The North Catasauqua community is wonderful,” Veronica Moyer said. “It’s a great place to work and a great place to live.”

A reception was held at borough hall immediately following the ribbon cutting.
