Freedom wrestling coach Anthony Marino has set the bar high for his team this weekend at the District 11 3A wrestling tournament.
The Pates bring a full roster to the tournament, which gets underway Friday afternoon at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium, with the hopes of advancing half his team to next week’s regional round.
“The magic number is seven for how many guys I’d like to advance to next week,” Marino said. “This number is high, but I know my guys and the ability they have when it comes to competing.”
Freedom returns two medalists from a year ago in CJ Horvath (121) and Jared Karabinus (172). Horvath finished third last season, while Karabinus reached the finals, but settled for silver. They’ll both be in contention to make a run to Saturday’s championship round. Marino also likes the chances of several other wrestlers to make a medal run.
“I think Ty Johnson has an opportunity to surprise some guys and medal at 107,” Marino said. “CJ has a really good shot of medaling as well as Joey Bodnar (145), Keenan Ray (139), and Karabinus. All of these guys have been working so hard and are looking to earn their spot at the regional tournament.”
Here is Freedom’s complete lineup for this weekend.
