PHS boys beat Kids, Zephs
The Parkland High School boys basketball team was searching for some positive momentum heading into the postseason. The Trojans had lost two games in a span of three days in the final week of the regular season.
Parkland was indeed able to bounce back and end the season with a win, taking down Whitehall this past Monday in the regular season finale to finish a 2-2 week.
On Tuesday, Jan. 31, Parkland held on to beat Northampton 38-35. The Trojans had to prevent a large second-half comeback from the Kids that saw them down 27-10 at halftime, and outscored the Trojans 25-11 in the final two quarters for the victory. Nick Coval and Joey Gerbasio both finished in double figures in scoring with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
It was a quick, 48-hour turnaround for the next game, hosting rival Emmaus. Emmaus had to complete a fourth quarter comeback to take down the Trojans on their home court, 47-45, last Thursday night. The Green Hornets led after the first and second quarters, but Parkland took a 37-33 lead after three. Emmaus outscored them 14-8 in the final frame to take the game. Coval led the way offensively with 22 points.
Parkland then competed in the annual Hoop Group Showcase event on their home court Sunday. The Trojans battled, but came up short against a tough Archbishop Wood team, falling 68-49. Coval scored 20 points and was named team MVP for the game. Matt Ray chipped in 12 points.
The Trojans were right back out there the next night looking to get back on the right track. Whitehall led 11-9 after the opening quarter, but Parkland answered and took a two-point lead at halftime. The Trojans took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Zephyrs 14-8, on their way to the 50-44 win. Three Trojan players scored double digits, including Coval with 16, Ray with 13 and Luke Spang with 10. Robbie Ruisch added eight points.
Parkland finished the regular season 14-8 overall and 12-4 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Trojans received the third seed and will host the sixth seed, Bethlehem Catholic, on Friday night in the quarterfinal round of the EPC tournament. The winner will play in the semifinals against the winner of Pocono Mountain West and East Stroudsburg South.
