There’s no debate - the Emmaus rifle team owns the Northeast Pennsylvania Rifle League.
After winning the regular season title, the Green Hornets added the postseason championship last Thursday afternoon at Unami Fish and Game Association when they downed Stroudsburg in the tournament final, 999-997. With the victory coach Michael Schuler’s team earned a trip to the Pennsylvania Tournament, scheduled for Feb. 14.
“We only lost one senior due to graduation, so this season was a lot of picking up where we left off right away - better even - since so many of our kids participate in year-round programs at clubs like Guthsville, Ontelaunee and North End,” Schuler said. “The kids just came into the year running and haven’t slowed down since. It’s a matter of everyone being locked in and ready to go at the same time for the same matches, which is just great.”
The No. 1 seed Hornets won the title over the No. 2 seed Mountaineers by showcasing their depth. Four shooters - Griffin Lake, Kaden Issa, Zachary Brenner and Sanaiya O’Neal - each shot 200s, while Molly Yard finished fifth on the roster with a 199 score.
In the semifinals Emmaus downed No. 4 seed Freedom last Tuesday afternoon at Unami, 998-986. Lake, O’Neal and Yard led the way with 200s, while Issa and Yard chipped in 199 scores.
Next up is the state individual qualifying matches set for Feb. 7, with the state matches set for two days later.
