Girls top Whitehall in season finale
The Parkland High School girls basketball team will be looking to get past the month of January and the end of the regular season and look toward the postseason, starting with the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference tournament, which begins this weekend.
After winning their first nine conference games to open up the 2022-23 regular season, the Trojans lost six of their final 10 games to close out the season, three of which were EPC games.
On Tuesday, Jan. 31, Parkland led from start to finish and closed out a double-digit victory on its home court, taking down Northampton 40-28.
About 48 hours later, the Trojans suffered a loss to a team they are not used to losing to, rival Emmaus. Early on, it looked like it was going to be yet another matchup against these two schools that would be won by the Trojans. They raced out to an early double-digit advantage, leading 19-8 after the opening quarter.
Parkland extended its lead to 14 points in the second quarter before Emmaus began to claw back, outscoring the Trojans 48-29 the rest of the way to win 56-48. It was the first win for the Green Hornets over the Trojans since 2012.
Two players finished in double figures in scoring for Parkland, led by Talia Zurinskas, who had 18 points, including four made 3-pointers. Madison Siggins tallied 10 points and Alexis Brader was just shy of double digits with nine points. Delaney Chilcote contributed six points and Aneri McGalla rounded out the scoring with five points.
Thankfully for the Trojans, there was another game during the season to get the bad taste out of their mouths before playoffs. They had a complete game in dispatching of Whitehall on the road this past Monday, 49-26, to close out the regular season.
Parkland ended the regular season with a 15-7 overall record and a 13-3 mark in the EPC. The Trojans earned the four seed in the upcoming tournament and will host the fifth seed Bethlehem Catholic, the defending conference champion, on Friday night as part of a boys-girls doubleheader at Parkland High School.
