Former Hornet to play in Super Bowl

During the two weeks between the NFL Conference Championship games and this weekend’s Super Bowl, plenty of attention will be given to the first two brothers to face one another in the big game as the Eagles’ Jason Kelce and the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce will be roaming opposite sidelines Sunday.

While the national media drapes its attention over the Kelce family, many football fans around the Lehigh Valley know there’s another family of football-playing brothers who are represented in this year’s Super Bowl.

Emmaus High School graduate and former Hornet football player Kyzir White, who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason, will try to help his new team win it’s second Super Bowl in the past six years.

White and both of his brothers played college football and have been part of NFL teams.

Kyzir has followed in the footsteps of his oldest brother, Kevin. They both went to Lackawanna College after high school and then to the West Virginia University.

Kevin, a wide receiver, was drafted by the Chicago Bears after he was among the top receivers in the nation his senior year of college. He caught 109 passes for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns in his last season as a Mountaineer.

Kevin’s success might have helped the Mountaineer recruiters notice his brother Ka’raun, who went to WVU right out of high school as a wide receiver. He caught 124 passes for 1,862 yards and 17 touchdowns over his career, including 61 receptions for 1,004 yards an 12 TDs in his final season in 2017.

After going undrafted Ka’raun singed with three different teams (Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers) in 2018 and 2019 but was waived by all three

Kyzir, who played safety in college, made 152 tackles in his two years at West Virginia, including four sacks, 14.5 tackles for loss. He also picked off three passes, forced four fumbles and defended nine passes in his Division I college career.

He was drafted in the fourth round (119th overall pick) by the Los Angeles Chargers and played four seasons there. He was the 11th safety picked in the 2018 draft.

Moved to linebacker during his first NFL training camp, Kyzir White, who was 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds at the NFL combine, has excelled in the position.

He earned a starting spot during training camp and started his first game on opening day of the 2018 season against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team he will line up against on Sunday.

An injury slowed down his first season but not his professional career. He played in 44 games from 2019-2021, including every game of the 2019 and 2021 seasons.

Kyzir White’s best season statistically came in 2021 when he led the team in tackles. He made 144 tackles (90 solo tackles; seven tackles for loss), forced a couple fumbles and picked off two passes.

In the offseason he signed a one-year contract with the Eagles. He played in all 19 games for the NFC East Division champs this season and made 117 tackles, including three for loss and 1.5 sacks.

Now he’s going to play in the biggest game of his career.

Emmaus and Lehigh Valley area football fans will be watching the former Hornet with the pride of knowing where White’s career began.
